The Things That Go Bump
Elves in Buldan usually belong to one of two tribes: The Zsylf and the Brakko.
The Zsylf are a nomadic, east-sylvan elven tribe scattered throughout the buldanese plains. They’re expert horseriders and marksmen, and employ specially-bred gorgruvas in both hunting and war. They employ both bows and firearms, preferring the former for hunting and the latter for combat with other tribes or monsters.
Zsylf elves are smaller and more compact than other elves. Their skin ranges from olive to tan, and have angular facial features. They have slanted eyes that range from golden to green and grey. Zsylf hair is either black or dark red.
Zsylf elves base their society on family units, their hierarchy favoring age and experience. They are hunter-gatherers and live completely off the land. The only technology they care for and favor are firearms, which they value greatly.
Zsylf elves pledge alliegance to Queen Nimué and the Seelie Courts. Many also worship elementals and spirits of all kinds, each individual family having their own protector spirits.
Trade & Relations
Zsylf elves trade with most racial groups except for the Brakko, the Kurgan and the Dráugr, though they can set aside their differences with the former two if they have to fight the latter. Their main trades are dry meat, fur, rough textiles, seeds and spices. An especially desperate tribe might trade one or two of their horses, but this is rare.
Zsylf elves are specialized skirmishers and make devastating use of their horse-riding skills and firearm marksmanship. When cornered into melee they favor slashing hybrid weapons such as kukris and falcatas. When a zsylf elf reaches adulthood, he/she is awarded with a rifle and a horse, which they must care for as if they were an extension of their own flesh.

The Brakko are a large, clan-based ethnic group settled at the base of the Carpus Mountain Range, deep into the Valpurgian forest. They are lawful and war-like to a fault, and believe the settlers from the South to be unwelcome invaders who must be taught a harsh, definitive lesson. This puts them at odds with many of the tribes in the region, since most of them trade with the southern settlers on a regular basis.
The Brakko are tall, lean and more muscular than other elves. They have thick eyebrows and the males grow abundant facial hair, which they groom carefully and attentively as they do with their pitch black hair. Their skin tones range from tanned to pale white, and their slightly slanted eyes range from auburn to gold.
Brakko society is a warrior meritocracy where cunning, martial skill and loyalty to the clan above all else are paramount. While not a war-mongering kind, they never hesitate to use force if they perceive a threat or offense, even on an individual level. This makes dueling common and acceptable even among themselves, though they’d rather avoid bloodshed within their ranks by settling disputes with hunting and tracking contests, activities in which they excel.
Brakko religious practices vary between clans. Some clans do not believe in or worship any gods, instead revering nature and its aspects. Others pledge themselves to the Druidic tradition for advice, favors and blessings. Most other clans worship the Seelie Courts, favoring those that promote combat and valor.
Trade & Relations
The Brakko seldom trade with any other tribe or settler, with their closeness to the Carpus Mountain Range and the Valpurgian Forest allowing them to be for the most part self-sufficient. They are not above, however, taking spoils from their battles and raids with other tribes and settlers, especially firearms and body armor, which they modify and fashion into their own.
Brakko breed and mount bearhounds, as well as grorgruva for hunting and skirmishes. They make use of small, organized infantry units and shock troops and are expert tacticians, knowing how to exploit their enemies’ weakness to their advantage. They are excellent hunters and virtually the best trackers of the entire region, with the arguable exception of the Barulfr.
